There are many sweet doctrines in the Bible which I delight
to make my own by reading, marking, learning, and inwardly
digesting them; for they are parts of the great circle of
truth which is revealed of God.But I find that I am never so comforted, strengthened,
and sustained, as by deliberately considering Jesus
Christ’s precious death and atoning sacrifice. His sacrifice is the center of the circle, the focus of the light.
There is a charm, a divine fascination, about His wounds.
O sacred head, once wounded!
I could forever gaze, admire, and adore! There is no beauty in the world like that which is
seen in that countenance “more marred than any man”.There is no sustenance to the heart like the sustenance
that comes from His flesh and blood, given up in anguish
and in death to work out our redemption.Oh! what enlightenment, what joys, what consolation, what
delight of heart is experienced by that person who has learned to
feed on Jesus, and on Jesus alone! Yet the realization which we
have of Christ’s preciousness is, in this life, imperfect at best.As an old writer says, “Tis but a taste!”
Soli Deo Gloria
